Tobias Junior

  • First performance: 8th February 1616, Kroměříž
  • Author: Georgius Dingenauer, SJ (1571–1631)

The play Tobias Junior was written by the Jesuit preacher, missionary, and professor of rhetoric Georgius Dingenauer (1571–1631) for a festive performance celebrating the marriage of Václav Vilém Popel of Lobkowicz and Markéta Františka of Dietrichstein. Markéta was the niece of the Bishop of Olomouc and Cardinal František of Dietrichstein, for whom Dingenauer served as confessor, librarian, and archivist. The play was performed by students of the Jesuit Academy in Olomouc on 9 February 1616 in Kroměříž, at an unspecified venue, one day after the wedding ceremony as part of the marriage celebrations. Textual evidence suggests that the production included relatively sophisticated stage effects. With the financial support of Cardinal Dietrichstein, the play was published later that same year in Olomouc by Jiří Handl.
