The Most Tender Pallas
The title of the book is derived from the term Pallas Mansuetior, which was often used to refer to the school in literae annuae, the annual reports of Jesuit colleges. The book contains five plays intended for the lower grades, i.e. grammar classes, in Jesuit colleges, which were selected to represent typical thematic areas of the preserved plays for grammar classes. The most common subjects include both spiritual (narrations about young men at a crossroads, saints, martyrs) and secular themes (stories from the royal court and stories that describe interpersonal relations). The selected plays are placed within the context of the theatrical production both in the Bohemian province and in other Jesuit schols in the Transalpine region. Introductory studies analyse the general features of plays for grammar classes, their structure, and their thematic frameworks.
The publication was created with the financial support of the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR), as a part of postdoctoral project no. P406/12/P823. Jesuit school plays from Czech lands written for Grammar classes, which was solved in 2012-2016.
