Latin Biblical Drama in the Czech Lands during the Pre-White Mountain Era
The project Latin Biblical Drama in the Czech Lands before the Battle of White Mountain, carried out between 2022 and 2024 and funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR, Grant No. 22-03909S), aimed to provide a comprehensive study of early modern Latin biblical plays from the Czech Lands. The research focused particularly on placing these plays within the broader context of the biblical drama tradition and Neo-Latin drama.
The project's results are presented in the monograph of the same title, published by Academia in 2026. The introductory study traces the development of Latin biblical drama from the Middle Ages to the early modern period, compares works from the Czech Lands with contemporary productions from other European regions, and examines the relationship between early modern biblical plays and ancient, particularly Roman, drama. The second part of the volume contains critical editions of four previously unpublished early modern Latin biblical plays from the Czech Lands, each accompanied by a facing-page Czech translation. The Latin texts are also available as a digital edition.
