St. John of Nepomuk on the stage of Jesuit schools
The first volume focuses on the preserved texts and synopses of Jesuit school plays pertaining to St. John of Nepomuk. The edited plays allow us to observe how Jesuits worked with the character of the Saint in their plays, using dramatic patterns that can also be witnessed in different dramatic works with different topics. They demonstrate that the Jesuit playwright who selected a saint as his protagonist could choose from a variety of ways to portray him in the text with respect to the age of his pupils.
Three introductory studies focusing on Jesuit schools and theatre in general, which reflect the Nepomucene cult and its forms at the time the presented plays were created. These also summarize information about the edited textual corpus, placing it within the context of other theatrical manifestations of Nepomucene reverence.
The edition of six manuscripts of plays and fourteen printed synopses.
