Sanctus Joannes Nepomucenus, invictus sacramentalis silentii athleta
- First performance: 1729, Opole [PL], poetic and rhetoric
- Author: Josephus Werner, SJ (1697–1756)
The play The Utmost Honours Paid to Holy Relics of St. John of Nepomuk is an allegorical story with planets and celestial bodies in the principal roles, based on the legendist mention of five stars shining above John’s dead body in the Vltava river. The deities of Parnassus, who are the patrons of individual planets, led by Apollo (the Sun), prepare a revenge on the tyrant Wenceslas after John’s death. When they find out that John was granted immortal glory by divine grace, they lay down their weapons and start to prepare the celebration of his martyred death. This includes arranging festive lighting of his remains in the river or bringing him presents; in the end, a monument of Nepomucene glory emerges from the water. More info in Czech
