About the project

The aim of this project is to acquaint the public with Early Modern dramatic texts from Bohemian lands associated with the then scholastic circles that cherished the Latin language and culture as the basis of all learning. The first volumes of the series presented a selection of previously unpublished texts of Jesuit school plays.

The main principle of the edition was to make the reading comfortable for the contemporary reader, while preserving the specifics caused by the time of the texts’ making, their purpose or the nationality of their authors.

The core of each volume consists of editions of texts of the plays, or their synopsis, accompanied by text-critical notes and a mirror prosaic translation. Each of the published texts has its own preface, information about the authors is summarized in medallions, the usual registers are expanded with an interpretative glossary of ancient and biblical names.

It was originally realized as a printed edition series (founded 2015), which since 2022 has also acquired its electronic form. Its aim is not only to publish the online version of the published publication, but also to convert this edition into the TEI5 format and present it in an appropriate visualization. This method will then be used for the preparation of other electronic versions of the volumes of the series Theatrum Neolatinum.
