Divus Joannes Nepomucenus invictus Christi Martyr, in silentio secreti confessionis et in spe publicae canonizationis gloriosus

The play St. John of Nepomuk, the Invincible Martyr of Christ, Glorious in his Silence Regarding the Seal of Confession and his Hope of the Public Canonization is divided into two parts: Joannes in silentio and Joannes in spe. The first part relates the story of John’s martyrdom and death. This rather grave plot is interspersed with comical interludes (extrarium), not included in the synopsis. It is therefore possible that Pannagl only added these to the version intended for publication. They feature a pair of “parasites”, Boniscus and Coniscus. Coniscus, unlike his companion (and unlike John of Nepomuk), does not know the right moment to keep his mouth shut and ends in prison together with John. He is threatened to be drowned but it is not clear whether this really happens. The second part of the play takes place after John’s death and its main subject is spreading of his fame and struggle for his canonization. Mainly allegorical characters appear here, e.g. Impiety, Night, Heaven, Prague or Vltava. More info in Czech
