Gedeon, comaedia nova, cum primis ad usum scholasticum et conditionem temporum accommodata

  • First performance: not known
  • Author: Andreas Rochotius (1583-1612)

Gedeon, a play by Ondřej Rochotius, was published in 1606 by the Šumanský printing house in Prague, most likely during the period when Rochotius was serving as rector of the Latin school in Prostějov. It is generally considered to be the author's first dramatic work. No evidence has survived that the play was ever performed on stage. Although the introductory dedicatory poem refers to actors (comaedi, v. 5) and to a chorus of youths "dancing in comic buskins" (saltet et haec comicis pubis chorus undique soccis, v. 77), the work appears to have been intended primarily as a closet drama, that is, a play written for reading rather than for theatrical performance.
